“We have $22k in cc debt…but I want to renovate the house”
Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich talks to Paul and Morgan, 37 and 33, live in New York City. They find themselves in a painful loop of arguments and unchecked spending, putting the future of their young family at risk. We hear about destination concerts, ongoing renovations, and charged vacations-but it’s their fixed cost percentage that is most worrisome.

    My parents are small business owners and had a financial advisor in this mold who helped manage their pension funds. The returns were quite frankly embarrassing on their pensions and some of the funds they were buying were confusing at best. Best part is of course that this dude would make a good deal of money from each meeting he took with them and it infuriated me. Once I saw what funds they had, I helped them buy some other ones and their returns got better by about 20% already. I’m 100% sure this dude was just trying to fleece them because there’s a simpler way to get good returns that don’t involve paying some leech that don’t really have their best interests in mind. I’m glad I could help them out.

    You know what mine would be? A $ saved at 21 is worth about 4 times more than a dollar saved at 41. Compound interest is more powerful as a concept than any other investment advice. The average cost of college over 4 years is $100k. If you put $100k into an index that yields 7% after inflation at 18 you would retire with $4.3M.

    I know a couple who have been married for 25 years. They are also both "foodies", no alcohol. Now that they are in their 50's, their extra money and savings is being drained due to medical expenses. They are both obese and have many health complications from the obesity. I don't know if they could go back that they would change anything, but it is surely sad to watch. Health over money for some of us I guess.

    Everyone, poor, working class, middle-class, or rich, all describe themselves as middle-class. I would say that has less to do with frugality and more to do with basic politics. Being poor is shameful, a sign of failing, and these people are often talked about as if they're moochers living off the rest of us. Our politics typically center around raising their taxes and decreasing their benefits (Mitt Romney's 47% comments) Wealthy we talk about as tax avoiders, also taking advantage of the labor of others, and contributing money to politicians to make sure loopholes are in place so they pay less taxes than others. Politically, it's always discussed that their taxes should be raised (not just Bernie, but Joe Biden and Obama have often spoke of the need to raise taxes on this group). The middle-class are always talked about as the heart of America, and EVERYONE discusses that the taxes should be lowered for this group and their benefits raised- of course everyone wants to identify as this group. All political groups speak positively about this group and cater all their rhetoric to this group.

    • @jdp486
      @jdp486 5 часов назад

      The government sets the rules of taxes and tax-advantaged accounts. They've decided they would rather incentivize people to invest for their retirement or healthcare costs by giving them a tax break. Seems like they think that is "fair" so we should too. Exception is if you're being sketchy with your own company's stock (Thiel)

    • @mathprofii7877

      I’m not disagreeing with you about taking every exemption possible to limit your tax liability. It just seems to me that everyone who cries for the “rich” to “pay their fair share” also takes these exemptions and deductions. This makes them hypocrites.

    • @vulpixelful
      @vulpixelful 2 часа назад

      @@mathprofii7877The proportion of what the average person saves in taxes by investing in their 401k is miniscule compared to how much the rich could be paying if they weren't allowed so many taxation loopholes (that we couldn't really take advantage of, btw). I mean people who are multimillionaires and billionaires when I say "rich"

    • @mathprofii7877
      @mathprofii7877 12 минут назад

      @vulpixelful, You have fallen for the lie from the libs! Even if you confiscated, not taxed but confiscated, all of the wealth from the “rich” (as you have defined them), you wouldn’t even come close to covering the federal budget deficit for a single year. Washington DC does not understand the word “no.” They cannot stop spending money. America doesn’t have an income problem, we have a spending problem. Congress is so busy getting re-elected that they just kick this problem down the road rather than solving it.

      Fair huh? Tell me why it’s necessary to have 20-50% of taxes taken out of each paycheck, then have to pay sales tax on everything you buy, pay property taxes if you own a home, rent tax if you rent, taxes on short term and long term capital gains, tolls on highways, gas tax, taxes if you sell property, and the other 90+ taxes that are coded from the IRS? How is being taxed on everything in life AFTER already paying taxes on your wages fair? It’s like you’re working for a year, but only get to keep 6-7 months worth of pay. It’s literally a scam.

    • @mathprofii7877

      Some form of taxation is needed. However, when the government taxes us for $1, it ends up spending $1.75. The federal government will never stop the endless cycle of massive overspending because we the people want the government to give us money from the tax coffers.
